~Finding the balance between earthly delight and spiritual enlightenment~

About

Carnal Zen is my forum to explore all the ideas, contradictions, religions and credit card bills that pepper my life.

Big cities are trendy and cold.  Small towns have friendly neighbors and no clue.  Republicans like guns.  Democrats like taxes.  We all believe in these cliches.  From whichever side of the white picket fence you are on THOSE people are not like you.  We mingle only within our socio-economic strata and other caste systems which should be buried in history.  It gets even worse during election season as battle lines are drawn and labels are hurled at eachother with the force of moral superiority.

This morning, over cheerios, I tried to convince my 7 and 5 year old godchildren that I was NOT in fact a grown up.  They asked my age and wondered why I seem like grown up sometimes.  We giggled and laughed but it got me thinking about the ways we define others and now I’m looking for some new rules to break.

This week I’m going to try to bag the stereotypes and create a world that has a little less “us” and “them”.  “WE” all need to begin rebuilding regaining our social identity with things that bring us together- no victory can be acheived by tearing eachother apart.

  1. Absolutely love this! ” From whichever side of the white picket fence you are on THOSE people are not like you. We mingle only within our socio-economic strata and other caste systems which should be buried in history.” That is terrific and so poetic and true! Great writing that makes you stop and think, the best kind. Thank you Dawn!
