Sunday yoga at my gym is a crap shoot. In 6 months we have had 7 different instructors. Some were really bad, others mediocre. One pretended to ignore a raucous argument between students over a ringing cell phone. The time worked for me, the location perfect so I held out. Turns out, it was worth the wait.
Yesterday’s class with Ganapati was a gift. If I kept a gratitude journal Ganapati and the Sivananda tradition he taught would fill a page but the inspiration transcended the yoga mat.
Saturday was the summer solstice. It is a new cycle, a new season and the chance to set new intentions. Although we have all made resolutions and set intentions (usually around the first of January) their failure has become cliché. I have however, had better luck with lists. Some are small i.e. the note hanging from a magnet on the fridge that reminds me to spend 2015 minutes straightening up daily. Others, hidden in the backs of journals hold bigger reminders - like lists of all the places I want to see in the world. There’s a lot of debate about the powers of attraction. In some ways I am a believer and on some days I admit to being a skeptic. Even so, I’m willing to invite abundance, happiness and health into my life, because what have I got to lose?
The British philosopher John Locke once said “Intention is when the mind, with great earnestness, and of choice, fixes its view on any idea.”
During today’s savasana (rest) I was gently reminded by Ganapati that inner joy is a choice. So obvious, so simple and yet I needed to hear it again. Maybe you do too.
INNER
JOY
IS A
CHOICE.
